2017 Translational Research Pilot Grant Program
The Translational Research Pilot Grant Program has been established to fund the completion of proof of concept projects that will support the development of translational research projects with industry partners and the establishment of new companies or strengthen patent applications based on IUB discoveries. Applications are being accepted with a Extended deadline of April 15, 2017.
Eligible Projects: All projects in any discipline directly related to moving IUB research or scholarly activities closer to commercialization are eligible. Projects must be based on discoveries that have been submitted to the IURTC in the form of an Invention Disclosure http://iurtc.iu.edu/forms/index.shtml. Project proposals may be submitted by any IUB faculty member. Project budgets up to $25,000 will be considered and can be used to support research in the Principal Investigator’s laboratory, or for purchased services from IU core facilities or external vendors.
Proposal Reviews: Pilot Grant applications will be assessed for their scientific merit, the potential to significantly enhance the commercial development of the new discovery, and the potential for the creation of new intellectual property.
Application Due Date: April 1, 2017
Funding will be available June 1, 2017
Application Instructions: Submit all materials electronically at JCITR@indiana.edu in MS Word and MS Excel documents. Project descriptions should clearly and concisely describe the research objectives, research strategy, and how the expected outcomes will enhance commercialization activities for the discovery being developed. Failure to complete all steps may cause your application to be returned for further information.

- Project Summary - Summary should not exceed 250 words and should include a brief description of the discovery being developed, specific aims, research strategy, and an explicit statement of how the project will enhance commercial activities.
Research Plan (3 pages maximum)
- Goals - Provide a concise description of the long term goals for development of the discovery (e.g. licensing, establishing a new company) and how the project will enhance the completion of these goals. The strength of this statement will be a critical component of the review process.
- Specific Aims
- Research Strategy -P rovide a concise description of the research approaches and methods that will be used to complete the Specific Aims. Include unpublished preliminary data if necessary to support rational for the proposed research strategy.
- References (Only essential references need be included)
Letters of Support
Letters from potential industry partners or investors describing their interest in the discovery and the importance of the proposed project may be included.
Budgets must be summarized using the MS Excel budget template. Be sure to include the PI Name, Project Title and Project Period information on the header. Please email email@example.com for budget template.
Pilot grants funds cannot be used to support lead PI faculty salaries. Partial support of research staff and students is allowed.
Project period maximum is 1 year. Extensions will only be granted after review and approval of extenuating circumstances detailed in a written request to JCITR.
Budget Justification (1 page maximum excluding quotes)
Provide details outlining the estimated costs for specific expenditures anticipated for the project. Provide a quote from the core facility or vendor that will be utilized for any purchased services.
Biographical Sketch (4 pages maximum)
Biographical sketches must be provided in either the NIH or NSF formats and should include a brief summary of any previous commercialization activities relevant to the project.
A summary report describing technical progress and a financial accounting of funds spent will be due 1 month after the completion of the project.

Eli Lilly Visit
IU life sciences students had the opportunity to visit Eli Lilly’s corporate center in Indianapolis. The students explored the campus, heard a lecture on the drug discovery process and the trials and successes of Lilly’s history. They connected with passionate researchers behind the hard work in discovering and screening the efficacy and safety of drugs. JCITR plans to build upon this success with possible annual visits to Lilly and other corporate partners.
Velocity Conference 2016
A group of faculty and students went to the 2016 Velocity Conference! The graduate-level Velocity Conference, dedicated to the acceleration of entrepreneurial careers, has become a tradition within the Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation. Founded in 2000 by Jack M. Gill, PhD, Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business organizes this annual event in partnership with another university. Members of the Entrepreneurial Innovation Academy at Kelley, along with a selected host school, meet CEOs from high-potential businesses and the venture capitalists that fund them.
